10 things people don’t always understand about mental illness

I wanted to write this article because I feel it’s important for everyone to at least try to understand mental illness. If you do live with mental illness, I hope you find some comfort in this. If you do not live with mental illness, I hope you learn something from this. If you know someone who lives with mental illness, I hope this helps you reflect.

I want to debunk misconceptions. I want to shed light on the truth. I want to open up a conversation around mental health. I want to be honest.

I hope these points I am about to make, do these things.

1. It makes you feel like nobody understands.

I made this number one for a reason. Having a mental illness can be isolating. A mental illness is an illness. It alters your brain functioning. It makes you think and feel differently than “normal” minded people. And to tell you the truth, they don’t understand. And honestly, even people with their own mental illness will not truly understand. Nobody, but you, will know what it’s like to be you. Nobody will understand what it feels like to live with your mental illness. I hate to be a downer, but honestly, nobody understands. The thing is though, that’s okay.
